In Autumn

We will be catching up with events for 2022 soon

Finding out what’s on in Burgundy is getting easier, but it is still can be pretty hit and miss! We strongly recommend that you visit the Tourist Office in Meursault or Beaune to find out precise details.

The best guide to what’s on that we have found is the “What’s on in and around Beaune” website. Put in your dates and off you go!

On this page we will occasionally highlight specifics that have caught our eye, or things we have discovered which are not featured in the above guide.

What’s on in the Cote d’Or in Autumn 2019

Well, of course, it’s the Vendange! Generally this happens in late August/early to mid September. In 2017 vignerons are currently expecting it to be more or less on time. But who really knows until a few days before it happens?!

So don’t expect the vignerons to have tourists uppermost in their minds at this time of year – it is a nerve racking  business, deciding when to pick.

However, there is lost to see with all of that action going on!

It can be a bit more noisy than usual with the end of harvest parties which go on, but, hey, they deserve it!

In the slider above, we show a few pictures of what goes on in Autumn…

The first entries below relate to long-running events and then we go into specific one-off events by date…

On 7, 28 September and 12 October 2019 in Beaune there is a full day introduction to wine tasting (09.15 to 18.30). Every Saturday from 3 March to 2 November 2019 in Nolay, there is a visitor experience, including visits to the vineyards, demonstrations of the work being done at that time of year, exploration of the winery and explanation of the vinification process, ending with a convivial tasting of four wines. We always visit the Hospices de Beaune when we stay at our holiday home in Puligny Montrachet, Burgundy.

And now for the world famous event in Beaune on 16 to 18 November 2018. The charity Hospices de Beaune wine auctions. In their historical tradition they continue to generate funds for the Beaune hospitals, now relocated to slightly more modern premises!

Each year, on the third weekend of November, Beaune plays host to the world’s most famous charity wine sale. Professionals, connoisseurs and wine lovers come together for two days of festivities, the epitome of pure Burgundy tradition.

Beaune and its hospices (charitable institution) have been passing on the singular taste of the grapes of Burgundy since the 15th century.

These highly sought after wines are drunk around the world and this is largely thanks to the internationally renowned annual charity auction.

One of our favourite Beaune glimpses is through the gate of the Hospices de Beaune. We recommend it to all visitors to our holiday home in Puligny Montrachet.

The auction takes place in a unique setting: the Hôtel-Dieu is an extraordinary collection of hospital buildings with their glazed coloured tiles, built by Nicolas Rollin, chancellor of Philippe le Bon (Philip the Good), Duke of Burgundy, in 1443.

Since 1471, vast tracts of land have been donated and bequeathed to the Hospices de Beaune and its vineyards extend throughout the Côtes de Nuits and the Côtes de Beaune. And since 1859, the Hospices’ prestigious vintages have been sold by candlelight on the third Sunday of November every year. For several centuries now, the entire proceeds of this exceptional charity auction have been dedicated to the charitable and religious works of the old hospices as well as new civil and secular hospital institutions.

A number of events are organised throughout the weekend of festivities: street shows, gala dinners, concerts, prestigious tastings, etc. The weekend culminates in the wine auction.

There is so much on at this time that we could fill a whole website. Every village in the area will put something on. Ask at the local tourist office for more information.

automnales de pommard glass

At the same time as the Hospices de Beaune (16 to 18 November) there is a large wine festival, organised by the Confederation des Appellations et des Vignerons de Bourgogne. There will be over 3,000 different wines to sample. It is held at the Palais des Congress de Beaune, Ave Charles de Gaulle. Entry is €25.

On 17 November 2018 in Meursault, Domaine Boyer Martenot will be hosting “Jazz en Cave” a jazz concert in their cellars. This will be accompanied by a tasting and amuse-bouche. 19.00 until 23.00. €15 last year.

If you fancy splashing out for a Gala event, then consider the special wine sale dinner at the Caveau de Pommard at 18.30 on 17 November (please check this date). It is a “brotherhood dinner”, so expect lots of Burgundian wine songs! Click here to discover more… Evening or cocktail dress, aperitif at 19.30. Tickets €120. For another €100 you can be inducted into their brotherhood! You must complete a form and pay in advance for this event.

We believe that the Dijon Christmas Market may start sometime around 24-26 November, but we do not have any information as yet. If you are interested in this, please ask us and we will make further enquiries.
